Propuesta BioBirDiversity-Lab

Project proposal name: Atlantic Arch Laboratory for Biodiversity throughout Birds as bio-indicators, concept note for call INTERREG Atlantic Area

Acronym: BBD-Lab or BioBirDiversity Lab

Project aim and benefits:
The project goal is to develop a shared European Laboratory to improve Biodiversity in Nature 2000 areas in the Atlantic Coast.

This Laboratory will be decentralized and devoted to produce, validate and consolidate a fruitful joint  research methodology over biodiversity health based in the analysis and monitoring of a selected group of migratory birds as bio indicators.

Also, this Laboratory will suppose the creation of a coordinated observatory model of these bio indicators among nature 2000 areas of biodiversity interest in European Atlantic Arch.

The Laboratory will be complemented with a focus in production of suitable ways to exploit sustainable employment and marketable opportunities for green - tourism sector which will stablish birdwatching routes across Europe to enjoy observation and taking care selected birds, their movements and their sanctuaries. Citizens views will be part of the scientific data source.

The aim is to contribute with added value with three innovative values or benefits:

  • Constitute a model of coordinated Laboratory in biodiversity as a model of forge for public (citizens, local public bodies, technology centers and academy)  and private partnerships (non profit organizations specialized in birds study, protection and environmental education and SMES) to build up their own sustainable routes in new creative ways based in biodiversity preservation and green tourism
  • Create, test and promote a range of new coordinated research among EU countries and introduce as innovation the active role of citizens as tourists and observers of birds of interest and with support of gaming in social networks.
  • Development models of PPP (Public Private Partnership) to test and engage implied agents as a way to consolidate biodiversity protection and new green employment opportunities in research and sustainable tourism sector

·        Methodology:

The BioBirDiversity Laboratory  would run a set of local pilot sites experiences in Nature 2000 areas in Spain (Huelva), Portugal (Algarve), France, UK and Ireland which will share topics of interest in birds monitoring as biodiversity indicators and generation of new products based in its enjoyable observation and protection. Due that birds under control will be shared among involved partners across Europe, it will suppose a whole enrichment throughout a feedback among each local experience. It would involve a mix of investigation in control of monitoring biodiversity indicators and related techniques, mix among green tourism products,…

Duration, tasks and distribution:

The project would have a duration of 24 months with following distribution of tasks (5 Work Packages (WPs):

·         WP1, development of basis for BioBirDiversity-Lab in indicators and scientific methodology (state of the art, sources, methods of control, identification of nature 2000 areas of control, relationships within each ecosystem to be taken into account, relationships with whole ecological system in each area, possibilities in green tourism in each areas, design of demonstrative pilots, definition of work to be done with researchers, citizens, existing enterprises and public sector).

·         WP2, development of self - training materials for conduct BioBirDiversity-Lab and implement techniques to test and validate proposed methodology.

·         WP3, design and development of models of PPP (Public Private Partnership) to test and engagement of local green tourism providers, public bodies, non profit bodies, academy and end users as consumers as instrument to consolidate new marketable green tourism offers and employment based in new pilot demonstrative offer in bird watching.

·         WP4, development of local green tourism pilots in Spain, Portugal, France, UK and Ireland, with different specialization in bird watching. It is expected to develop pilots devoted in different marketable ways to exploit creativity with birdwatching and share lessons learned from each pilot. Transfers and Consolidation of lessons learned in an open BioBirDiversity-Lab

·         WP5: project management

·         WP6 Communication and Project dissemination plan. Campaign for transfer of project results
